Nicci Canada: Myrtle Beach Jazz Festival Performer

Nicci Canada has become a regular presence at the Myrtle Beach Jazz Festival, taking part in both the 2018 and 2019 editions.

The Charleston, West Virginia, native has also performed with the Charleston Symphony, the Tulsa (Okla.) Signature Symphony, and as the star of Lady Ella, a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald created with musical director Letron Brantley. She also been favorably compared with another legendary jazz vocalist: “Singing on stage with Nicci is as close as I will come to singing with Billie Holiday,” said Ron Raines, an Emmy-nominated actor on TV’s Guiding Light whose numerous Broadway turns have included the memorable 1983 revival of Show Boat.

Nicci Canada released her first solo album, the eclectic Twenty Twelve, in 2011. “I would consider myself to be a jazz/soul singer,” Canada told Douglas Imbrogno of the Charleston (W.V.) Gazette-Mail, “but listening to Twenty Twelve, you’ll hear the soul and neo-soul music in the music as well as a little gospel.”

Canada has also appeared at the Jazz Room and the Kings Drive Art Walk in Charlotte, and at the Jazz Rendezvous in Jacksonville, N.C. She earlier shared a bill with modern-day jazz master Branford Marsalis at the the Wells Fargo Community Celebration in Charlotte.

“Spinning image and story after image and story, this lovely young lady is someone to whom you could listen for a long while without ever even being cognizant of the time,” critic Ronald Jackson said. “A most expressive vocalist with strong, precise, and distinctive pipes, Canada incorporates R&B and jazz phrasings and mixes in her own excitement and heavy doses of confidence.”

As always, the Myrtle Beach Jazz Festival is free. Bring your lawn chairs. There are also food and merchandise vendors, children’s activities and a wine and beer garden.
